Junior Interior Designer

Morris Lare Interiors is seeking a creative, energetic, collaborative Junior Designer with residential design experience to join our growing team! This role is full-time and will require the ability to travel.

We are searching for a candidate who is highly organized, has superb attention to detail, who can creatively problem-solve, and is eager to learn and contribute to the design-process within a boutique studio environment. This person possesses the ability to multitask, prioritize and balance their workload, and keep composure under stress. They are adaptable, service-oriented, collaborative and demonstrate a positive attitude.

The junior designer will assist the Principal Designers and Senior Designer in completing multiple and varied FF&E projects..

Candidate must have strong communication skills for engaging with clients, vendors, showrooms, and a growing team. Ability to adapt and thrive in an ever-changing business environment is crucial. We are looking for a candidate with a passion for life-long learning who is excited to grow in the design field within a boutique studio setting!

The following activities comprise the majority of responsibilities of the Junior Designer:

  • Assist Lead Designers in sourcing materials & selections for various new construction, renovation & furnishing projects;
  • Assisting with preparation for client presentations;
    Assisting with the development of construction and specifications documentation;
  • Update, print, and provide reports on specifications as required;
  • Research, organize, and review manufacturer specifications for equipment, appliances, plumbing fixtures, and other selections and incorporate that information into the design drawings;
  • Assistance in drafting technical drawings (including floor plans, elevations, RCPs, sections, details, notes, custom furniture plans, and other appropriate documentation);
  • Creating budgets & assisting Designers and Procurement Manager with pricing / proposal development;
  • Communication and coordination with our build team partners to ensure Morris Lare’s designs can be (and are being) executed on site;
  • Assist design team in maintaining accurate project documentation in digital and print formats, including updating project binders for use on-site at projects
  • Managing assignments and meeting deadlines as assigned, unless otherwise communicated to project leaders;
  • Helping with client deliveries, installations, styling and photoshoots.

In addition to the aforementioned responsibilities, the Junior Designer may be requested to perform other duties including but not limited to:

  • Move and/or rearrange furniture, boxes, samples, and other items at the office;
  • Answer the office phone when the studio assistant or procurement manager are not available, take messages, and appropriately document new client inquiries;
  • Assist studio manager in maintaining studio library, as needed;
    Receive and sign for packages at the office;
  • Run errands for Designers or Procurement Manager, as assigned;
  • Attend networking events during company business hours, as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Design;
  • Experience in a Design Firm setting, such as a University approved internship;
  • Proficiency in a 3D modeling software such as Chief Architect, Revit or SketchUp;
  • Proficient with Microsoft office, Excel, Google, Dropbox and Adobe products;
  • Valid driver’s license;
  • Current car insurance.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Preferred by not required.

  • Experience working within Studio Designer and/or project management systems such as Asana, Basecamp and Slack.
  • Experience designing and drawing custom cabinetry and millwork.

compensation & benefits:

The Junior Designer position is for approximately 35-40 hours per week, depending on responsibilities and workload.

The Junior Designer is an in-person studio position with some flexibility to work from home two days per week. Morris Lare’s studio is located in the vibrant Valley Junction neighborhood – the original downtown area of West Des Moines – and is home to many restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques.

Salary begins at $40,000 and is commensurate with experience. We offer quarterly commission-based bonuses, as well as a 401K plan with employer contributions.

  • Mileage reimbursement for business related travel in personal vehicle during work hours.
  • Two weeks vacation (after six months employment).
  • Two weeks paid leave at Christmas and paid major holidays.
  • Flexible sick leave.

Senior Interior Designer

Morris Lare Interiors is seeking a creative, ambitious, collaborative Senior Interior Designer with previous residential design experience to join our growing team! This role is full-time and will require the ability to travel.

We are searching for a candidate who is a self-starter, highly organized, has superb attention to detail, who can creatively problem-solve, and is eager to contribute to all facets of the design-process within a boutique studio environment. This person possesses the ability to multItask, prioritize and balance their workload, and keep composure under stress. They are proactive when design challenges arise, take responsibility, and understand that there is always a solution.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Drafting technical drawings (including floor plans, elevations, and custom furniture plans);
  • Sourcing materials & selections for various new construction, renovation & furnishing projects;
  • Preparing for client presentations; consistently communicating with Morris Lare’s clients;
  • Developing construction documentation; creating budgets & pricing / proposal oversight;
  • Maintaining direct communication and coordination with our build team partners to ensure Morris Lare’s designs can be (and are being) executed on site;
  • And surveying existing sites and helping with installations + styling.

The senior designer will be working alongside the Principal Designers of Morris Lare Interiors to lead multiple and varied FF&E projects, with the assistance of junior members of the team.

Design & Project Management:

Together with the Principal Designer, the Senior Designer will:

Lead the creative and conceptual stages of assigned projects.

Inspire the design team, bringing new ideas and original design concepts.

Design and develop beautiful custom cabinetry and furniture, including case goods & upholstery.

Present Design Concepts and Design Solutions with ability to speak to the “why” behind the choice with an expert voice.

Manage & check for accuracy of information produced by consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers.

Coordinate and oversee the project’s technical documentation & detailed specifications, ensuring comments and revisions are always up to date.

Support the leadership team in producing detailed project timelines with internal milestones. Provide regular updates to the Principals on project progress, while keeping detailed track of time spent on project in relation to project progress.

Respond effectively to complex questions and troubleshoot problems, while working between various projects.

Forecast, identify, and communicate risks and bring ideas and solutions to the table with strategic thinking & a spirit of problem solving.

Endurance, enthusiasm and a high level of client care from start to finish of multi-year projects.

Leadership role:

Lead communication with build teams across various projects to bring Morris Lare’s Designs into reality.

Contribute to setting the internal design standards and guidelines, ensuring they are implemented by the entire team.

Monitor the project team’s output, report back to the Principal Designer in a constructive manner, highlighting highs and lows.

Mentorship to junior team members, providing help and guidance on Morris Lare’s internal methods, processes and procedures.
